Ellora Caves
About 45 minutes
Thirty-four rock-cut temples carved straight down into the hillside, Buddhist, Hindu and Jain side by side. Kailasa alone took a century. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ajanta Caves
About 2 hours 15 minutes
Thirty caves in a horseshoe of rock above the Waghora river, holding the finest surviving paintings of ancient India. Lost to the forest for a thousand years. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.

km
Daulatabad Fort
About 30 minutes
A hill fort on a cone of rock, with a moat, a dark spiral passage cut through stone, and a climb that earns you the view. Once, briefly, the capital of an empire.

km
Grishneshwar Temple
About 45 minutes
The last of the twelve Jyotirlingas, in red rock beside Ellora. Small, old and busy with pilgrims — worth seeing on the same trip as the caves.

km
Bibi ka Maqbara
About 15 minutes
Aurangzeb's son built this for his mother in the shadow of the Taj, and it has been compared to it unkindly ever since. Seen on its own terms, it is lovely.
